Benefits of oil pulling | How to do it

Someone said

The best outfit you can wear to make yourself beautiful is your smile.

Indeed smile can make you much more beautiful than any beauty product can.

But we often hear people saying that they don't smile because their smile is not that pretty. They feel uncomfortable.

There can be many reasons behind it.

Sometimes the reason completely depends on their oral hygiene. Bad breath, yellow teeth, bleeding gums are some of the common problems which people face in their day to day life. Visiting dentist, brushing your teeth twice or thrice, mouthwash, gum paints, bleaching, and what not but the results are temporary.

Either the process is too long or you don't get much results out of it.

This all has a huge impact on your pockets too.

Everyone going through all this always wish to have an easy way out.

So recently we came across this oil pulling technique which is said to have very effective result in mouth and gum problems.

Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic procedure that has been practiced since ages but it's just recently that people started knowing its effect.

If you are still unaware about this technique let me tell you everything you need to know about it.

What is oil pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic technique. Also known as 'Kaval'. This includes swishing oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. Its is believed that this will draw out all the harmful bacterias and toxins from your body.

Many people confuse oil pulling with 'Gandush'. In 'gandush' we fill our mouth completely with warm water or oil so that it won't move inside our mouth. We have to keep it still in gandush. While in 'kaval' the quantity is less that makes it easier for us to move the oil inside our mouth.

How to do it?

For oil pulling, place a tablespoon of coconut oil inside your mouth on an empty stomach.

If you don't like the taste of coconut oil, you can try any other edible oil like sesame oil or olive oil.

Swish it inside your mouth like a mouthwash but in a more gentle way for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you can't do it for so long start by doing it for 5 to 10 minutes then gradually increase the time.

Do not swallow it.

After you are done spit the oil in the garbage. Do not spit in the sink as it may lead to clogging.

When to do it?

It is advised to do it on an empty stomach for around 20 minutes in the morning.

This will draw out all the toxins and harmful bacterias from your body resulting in improved oral hygiene.

What to do after oil pull?

After you are done with oil pulling spit the oil in the garbage.

Wash your mouth with warm water.

You can brush your teeth immediately or after sometimes.

Some report says to wait and give your body some time to replace those bad bacterias with good ones. But you can do it immediately too. This won't cause any harm.

Who can do it?

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic morning routine technique hence anyone can do it.

Even children who are little mature can do it too.

The only precaution is not to swallow a single drop.

How often should you oil pull?

Start by doing it for 5 minutes a day. 15 to 20 minutes is a longer time.

The longer you will do the more bacteria and toxins will draw out from your body. But doing it for 5 to 10 minutes will also have the benefits

Don't tire yourself into doing it. If you feel tired only after few minutes, spit it.

Gradually increase your time.

Don't work too hard.

Doing it daily will increase your time gradually.

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

The reported benefits of oil pulling includes

  • Whiter teeth
  • Cavity prevention
  • Kills harmful bacterias
  • Reduce bad breath
  • Improves gum health
  • Reduces jaw pain
  • Allevation of headaches and skin issues
  • Improvement in acne and psoriasis too
  • Many people have even reported that it brings glow to your face
  • Improves scalp health

What are the precautions you should take during oil pulling? What are the possible side effects?

Do not swallow a single drop of oil.
If it is becoming too hard for you to hold it inside the mouth better spit it.

Oil pulling draws out the toxins from your body. And the oil that is in your mouth has those bacterias and toxins. Hence swallowing it can result in many health issues like pneumonia diarrhoea etc.

If you have coconut allergy you can do it with sesame oil, olive oil or any other edible oil too.

All the side effects that has been reported is either because of swallowing of the oil or because of the allergy with coconut.
Otherwise it is completely safe.

#This method does not replace brushing, flossing or mouthwash. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day to maintain your oral hygiene.
